Belle Whittaker Pottery

Hand thrown pottery, made to be used.

Worcestershire, England

Hands cupped around red terracotta being centred on the spinning wheel

Belle works out of her pottery studio in rural Worcestershire making hand thrown earthenware that is functional and timeless in design. Traditional skills combined with a strong sense of design ensure every piece of pottery resonates with the environment, anchoring its warmth and presence to be used and enjoyed.

I take my inspiration from nature around me and the colours and rhythms of the seasons. History, folklore, poetry and music all strongly influence my work.

The maker

Belle built her pottery studio from a disused building making use of recycled materials where possible. Awareness of sustainability and environmental impact means that where possible clay is recycled. Belle uses an efficient electric kiln with renewable sources of electricity, and firing terracotta at lower pottery temperatures also reduces energy output.

Belle works predominantly in red terracotta clay using slipware technique, scraffito and sponge stamping with her own designs. Some slips are made from powdered ingredients using oxides to colour. Her pieces are then finished with either clear or honey glaze for their final firing.

Belle studied a degree in Three Dimensional Design at Farnham Art College, and originally trained as a glassblower, completing her apprenticeship and establishing her own studio. She then made a conscious decision to step back and rest from this.

By chance she attended classes run by a contemporary potter and fell in love with clay. Many hours spent learning and practicing until she was able to establish her own pottery and range of work.

There is something quite humbling about working with clay, expressing and using your hands to create a timeless piece which gives enjoyment and has longevity.
